Jonah
a Jewish Prophet
the son of Amittai, from a town called Gath-hepher (abt. 5 miles from nazareth) within Galilee. (northern kingdom-israel)
Written by Jonah abt. 790 BC
During the reign of Jeroboam II (793-753 BC) and evil king.
First mentioned in 2 Kings 14:25
God told Jonah to prophesy to the Assyrians in Nineveh, a very wicked and evil town.

Jonah 1:1-3
v.1-2
God told Jonah to go to Nineveh and cry out against it. (call them to repent)
Nineveh - capital of Assyrian Empire, large gentile pagan city.
God saw their wickedness and He sent Jonah to give them the warning and judgment from God to repent.
v.3
Jonah chose to run to Tarshish (2500 miles west from Joppa) while Nineveh was only 550 miles east. He wanted to go as far away as possible.
Nahum 3:1-4 describes the wickedness of Nineveh
